Cusco (also known as Cuzco), is an impressive former Incan capital perched high in the Andes in south-eastern Peru. The Incas aptly called the city the “navel of the world” and, sitting at a dizzying elevation of 3,400 m (11,200 ft), you can see why. A fascinating and vibrant city, the Cusco you see today is built of ancient Inca temples and monuments, colonial architecture and modern buildings.

CUSCO CATHEDRAL

This imposing Cathedral proudly sits on Cusco’s Main Square and is one of our favourite places to visit in Cusco. Built on the site of the Inca palace of Viracocha it was completed in 1654 and is well worth a visit to learn more about how the Inca culture co-existed with the Catholic Church. It also has a fabulous collection of colonial art.

QORICANCHA TEMPLE

The Qoricancha Temple was the most important Inca Temple in Cusco and was dedicated to Inti the Sun God. Spanish colonists then built the Santo Domingo Church on the site to show their dominance of the local people.Guided tours highlight the interesting mix of two archaeological styles with Inca stonework and colonial architecture.

SAN PEDRO MARKET

A must-see on any visit to Cusco to see fresh Peruvian produce, meat and grains as well as souvenirs, spiritual supplies and locals enjoying the ‘menu del dia’ or daily menu at the food stalls.

SAN BLAS DISTRICT

The bohemian sector of Cusco is home to many artists, cafes, and shops. Picturesque cobblestone streets are a delight to wander through. Take your time and explore this unique corner of Cusco.
